Hey guys,
So my roommate/best friend/coworker with the 2013 Civic EX has decided he wants to move into a vehicle more substantial/sportier and after a tremendous amount of convincing, he wants to give the ol’ stick shift a shot. Unfortunately I started teaching him when I had my 6mt Sentra last year but my C70 lacks a third pedal to revitalize his memory and finish the job.
We know maybe two or three people with manual vehicles, and none of them are interested in letting us borrow them...any suggestions, or folks in the west-end of the Florida panhandle game to let him finish learning in your vehicle? Thanks guys x)

Step one: Purchase beater manual civic for $400.
Step two: learn manual.
Step three: Hoon.
Step four: Sell car for scrap value of ~$300.

This. You could probably sell it for $400.

MSF course. They’ll provide a bike that will teach him how to operate a manual transmission AND he’ll learn how to ride a motorcycle in the process. Win Win.

Nope. COMPLETELY different way to operate. I’d say this is actually dangerous for his future manual transmission.
Bikes have lubricated clutches and so you can use the clutch lever in a very gradual manner. Hell, they call it the “friction zone” for a reason. You can apply varying amounts of clutch along with throttle for better bike control. This is NOT how a car works. ALso learning how to ride a bike while also learning how to operate a sequential manual shifter is a long way to get around to learning how to drive a manual car. It still won’t be the same.

You’re forgetting the main point, which is rather than dumping your 3 year old car, which is still in warranty and already greatly depreciated, get a cheap bike to have fun on.

I’m all for good fun on cheap bikes (I own one myself) but my point is that it won’t prepare him, and if that’s how you reinforce habits then you’ll reinforce bad habits for driving a car.
